LASER SCANNING TECHNOLOGY AND 3D DESIGN

Vulcain's expertise is not limited to the manufacture and installation of industrial cladding.

Following management's strategic decision to add an experienced and imaginative design team, the vast majority of our projects are now designed in three dimensions, using state-of-the-art software.

This design method surpasses all other more traditional drawing methods in terms of precision and speed. It allows us to visualize every detail of the building, as well as the interaction between panels and balconies, doors and windows. Risks such as positioning, measuring and design errors are virtually eliminated from the equation. The time required to manufacture the panels is reduced to a minimum, and installation is facilitated by the fact that all panels fit perfectly together.

STEP 1

In cases where a traditional measuring method is not possible (curved walls, surfaces with complex angles or many details), the use of a laser scanner is the obvious option.

STEP 2

The device projects a laser beam onto the surface of the building, and each time the beam hits the surface, it records the coordinates of the point of contact in a computer file called a “point cloud”. A point cloud can contain several million points.

Using 3D modelling software, the technician imports the point cloud and recreates the scanned surface, starting by cleaning and eliminating unnecessary or out-of-contract parts.

They then proceed to create a complete three-dimensional (3D) model, accurate to approximately 6 mm (1/4″), of the actual surface.

The technician designs the panels and creates an assembly or places them on the surface of the 3D model. As this model is accurate and fully reflects reality, the panels are modified to compensate for positioning and alignment errors.

The result is a highly accurate, three-dimensional representation of the final project.

Each panel is designed and drawn to be “Parametric”. In other words, to modify its dimension, all you have to do is change its initial value, and the whole assembly will automatically adjust to the new value.
